Give me some Indie bands!!

HahahZombieHahahZombie FinlandPosts: 1,123 ✭✭✭
So I've been listening to indie-styled music for a while now, but I need to listen to new music now. I've been listening to bands like Vampire Weekend, Death Cab For Cutie and many more, and I really like them :)

So I thought, why not ask the nerdfighters what indie-music they listen to? So feel free to suggest any bands you like :)

Based off my Pandora stations, I'd suggest Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, The Postal Service, The Lumineers, The Killers, and Imagine Dragons. I'm not sure if they're what you're looking for, but I like their music. :)

Sounds good, I'll give them a listen :)

  • On the folk end of the spectrum, You can try the Great Lake Swimmers (sample suggestion: Your Rocky Spine). More alternative, try Patrick Watson (Sample songs: Fireweed, Big Bird in a Small Cage, Wooden Arms). If you haven't heard of Laurena Segura, She's a youtuber John recommended sometime last year, good tunes.

And because I'm a Classical Musician and I'm always trying to encourage folks to try some, you could try Dvorak's "American" String Quartet.
  • Based on what you mentioned, try The Shins, Bright Eyes,Arcade Fire, Tokyo Police Club,Bombay Bicycle Club,The Vaccines,
    and/or Passion Pit.
Also try City and Colour, Arkells, Born Ruffians, Bahamas, Noah and the Whale, Said the Whale,  Fleet Foxes, Belle and Sebastian,  Grizzly Bear, Two Door Cinema Club,  The Kooks, Young the Giant, and/or Cults.
I would say Arctic Monkeys but I don't think they really fit under the "indie" umbrella but I suppose that's the case for most of these bands. Sorry if I went overboard...
    Happy Listening! :)

My sister's a publicist for a well known Indie label so I hear a lot of the bands that are around now. If you like Indie, look into:
    Belle & Sebastien
    The National
    St. Vincent
    The New Pornographers
    Troubadour of the Last Ones

The Wurly Birds are great, and pretty much super indie. I have a bit of a bias for them because i know their drummer, but once I get passed that they're still absolutely amazing. They have a new album coming out in February, which I've had since October because I know their drummer, and It's probably my favorite album of theirs, which is saying something because the other two are stupidly great.

Dr Dog is another great one. Their new album Be The Void is my favorite album released in 2012. I borrowed it from the drummer of The Wurly Birds back in October. I should probably give it back, considering I've already bought myself a copy. Fate is another great album of theirs, with My Friend being a major standout track.

    Kodaline
    The Doc Foster Band
    Ramona Falls
    Menomena
    Lackthereof

most others I would've suggested have already been mentioned

Purity Ring, Daughter, A Fine Frenzy, BOY, First Aid Kit, The Sea and Cake, Allo Darlin, and Summer Camp. Also the Deftones are great but they have a heavier sound than the bands you listed.

I'm currently in love with Little Comets, Future Islands and Temper Trap! I'm always finding more artists thanks to my pandora!

@Elizabeth I actually listen to more heavier stuff than that too, but they aren't indie :D

Ah, in that case you'll be right at home with the Deftones. Alcest is also quite good but a bit lighter.

I thought of some more, this time with links to live videos to make it a bit easier, plus some I already mentioned with links ...

    Frightened Rabbit
    Spoon
    Kodaline
Okkervil River (Blacksheep Boy is one of my favorite albums ever ... I don't really care for any of their other stuff though)
    Menomena
Ramona Falls (+ the video for I Say Fever, because it's just ridiculously awesome)
Lackthereof (additional non-live clip because there's only one live video on YT)
    Wild Beasts
    Cold War Kids
Margot & the Nuclear So and So's
    The Bronze Medal
    Racoon (+1)
and I guess Astronautalis, since he's got a band now and does more singing (it's more hip hop, but most comments under his videos are along the lines of "I usually don't like hip hop, but this guy is great")

(I really only wanted to link one video per artist, but I got sucked in by YT once again, so I went a little over board with the linkage and some band names are made up of one video per letter ... sorry^^)

Oh, I left out The Civil Wars and The Local Natives. Good stuff there. And Keaton Henson's a guy not a band but his sobgs are heartbreakingly beautiful.

A lot of good bands have been mentioned, but I have a few to add:
    The xx
Kasabian (they don't really count as indie, but so what xD)
    alt-J
    Bloc Party.
I hope you enjoy them :D

I know some of these have already been mentioned, but I love Imagine Dragons, Of Monsters and Men, Passion Pit, and Two Door Cinema Club. I've been listening to TDCC's CD Beacon on repeat for the past month, it's fantastic!!!

A lot of my favourite bands are indie bands - some of them are Arcade Fire, The Magnetic Fields, Pixies, The Mountain Goats (who I'm guessing you've already listened to by now, but just in case), Amanda Palmer (who I am aware is a person, not a band, but just go with it), Modest Mouse, Belle & Sebastian (no pretentious indie fan is complete without them), and Pulp.

Those are the bands that I keep coming back to again and again. I quite like Vampire Weekend as well, so I figure you might like at least some of them. Sorry to bombard you with links. If you like any of the bands, then I'd be more than happy to point you in the direction of more of their music.

Whoa! Those are like all my favorite bands. Well, not all of them. But Mumford and Sons + Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes are the best. :D

Recently I've been listening to the Kooks, the Shins, Pheonix, and the Wombats a lot!

Also, I would highly recommend using songza.com, it's like pandora but in my opinion, better. They have a fantastic indie playlist selection! My favorite is sunshine indie pop :)
  • HahahZombieHahahZombie FinlandPosts: 1,123 ✭✭✭
@Mandy22 I like your recommendations, but I can't use songza because I don't live in America... And I can't use Pandora either... :/

But I do recommend 8tracks, where you can listen to playlists others have created, only things that bug me with it is you don't know what songs are in them until you are listening to it, and you can't skip many songs in a playlist in acertain timelimit. But it's good for discovering new music!

@hahahZombie I didn't realize you could only use songza in the US, that's too bad! Can you use spotify? It's not the best for finding new music, but it's fantastic for making your own playlists!

@Mandy22 I could, but the free version is limited, and I don't fancy paying that much xD

@HahahZombie How limited is it? I just use the free version and it's wonderful, you just have to listen to a short add every so often. But yeah, the premium version is way too much for me to even consider getting!
  • HahahZombieHahahZombie FinlandPosts: 1,123 ✭✭✭
@Mandy22 only a couple of hours free per month or so? I would think. But it could be different for the countries, I don't know. And I listen to way too much music for that to be enough xD

Foster the People's great, if you're into technopop. They've only released one album, but they'll have their second one this year. Give 'em a try!
You're kinda like the guy version of Alaska, and I'm your Miles (of course, female version), complete with the "scrawny-ass" attribute.

There is an awesome Aussie band called San Cisco, I'm not sure how popular they are overseas but if you like indie music they're very good. Also The Lumineers but you've probably already heard of them :P

Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties (indie pop punk)
